- Was Ragnar Loðbrók Real? What Did He do?
- Who Were His Wives?
- What of The Famous ‘Sons of Ragnar’?
- How Does His Tale End?
As with anything concerning history, there’s no simple answer to this question, but there is strong evidence to suggest that there was, indeed, a Viking warrior named Ragnar. The nickname Loðbrók or Lodbrok is an Old Norse combination word meaning “Shaggy Britches.” The earliest accounts of him from Denmark, Iceland, England, France, and Ireland al...
Ragnar famously had three wives, according to the sagas, though there is some disagreement on who bore which of his famous sons. These three wives: Lagertha, Thora Borgarhjört, and Aslaug, sometimes called Kráka. According to Danish sources, Ragnar meets Lagertha in battle, killing a Swedish king. He searches for her, and she gives him one more tes...

- though there is some evidence that he did exist. Whilst the evidence is scarce, with only a few references of Ragnar Lothbrok that exist in literature from the time, crucially it does exist.
- He had at least 3 wives. It is generally agreed Lothbrok married at least three women. His first wife, Lagertha, was a Nordic shield maiden who fought with Lothbrok as warriors in Norway when he was avenging the death of his grandfather, Fro.
- His nickname was ‘Hairy Breeches’ or ‘Shaggy Breeches’ This derives from Lothbrok allegedly boiling his cow-hide trousers in tar which he claimed protected him from the snake (or dragon, according to some sources) whilst winning his second wife Thora’s hand in marriage.
