Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-George (s) (25 December 1745 – 9 June 1799) was a French violinist, conductor, composer and soldier. Moreover he demonstrated excellence as a fencer, an athlete and an accomplished dancer. His historical significance lies partly in his distinctive background as a biracial free man of color.
After Le Concert des Amateurs orchestra disbanded due to lack of funding, it was resurrected during the early 1780s under a different name, ‘Le Concert Olympique’. Chevalier continued to conduct and the huge demand to see the new orchestra meant new, much larger digs were required to accommodate the large audiences that included royalty.

De Saint Georges was a contemporary of Mozart and Haydn, and he wrote countless symphonies, sonatas, concertos, opera and string quartets. He was a violin virtuoso and conducted one of Europe’s greatest orchestras, Le Concert des Amateurs.
