Sarah Isabella (Bell) Hansen was born in Kawarau Gorge, near Cromwell, Central Otago, on 28 November 1883. She was the sixth of seven children of Henrick (Henry) Peter Hansen, a Dane, and his wife, Mary Ann Bennett, who was born in England.
