The section on Woody Gelman may be the most important part of the undertaking, since so little of his picture had been painted in our hobby publications.

Jan 4, 2011 · Card Collectors Co. By comparison, Woody Gelman’s Card Collectors Co. list was a much more modest affair. It was only about half the number of pages that the Wholesale Cards list boasted, and while the Yeko list was a big 8½-by-11 inches, Gelman’s was a much more modest 5-by-7.
If you are unfamiliar, Rosen was Woody Gelman's step-father and a massive collector of match covers. Card Collectors Company started out as "Sam Rosen" in 1953 and then only changed over when Sam died on NYE 1958. He had covers made up each year for the Rathkamp Matchcover Society annual meets and this is the latest one I have.

Some of the other names which appeared in the earliest days of the hobby include Larry Kurzrok, Ed Lancaster, Howard Leheup, Stan McClure, Howard M. Myers, A.O. Philipp, Harold Ross, Samuel Tanenbaum, Fanny Troyer, Donald Van Brakle, Steve Vanco and Jake Wise.
Among these 18 pioneer collectors, few of them were wealthy, and they spent modest amounts on their collections. They met one another, perhaps, only a few times. Aug 4, 2023 · The company was big in artwork for several things leading up to baseball cards, including Bazooka Joe. The department was led by Woody Gelman, a cartoonist who co-created Mars Attacks and Bazooka Joe, and Sy Berger, the "father of modern baseball cards." They were famous for their 1952 Topps design, created on Sy's kitchen table.
Oct 10, 2023 · A New York native businessman, Sam Rosen, left the clothing industry in 1951 and went into the card business. Rosen's stepson, Woody Gelman, who was part owner of an art service that created all the Topps sets through the company of Solomon & Gelman although Gelman was later employed by Topps around 1956.
