Supported by his future wife, the Estonian Bolshevik Salme Murrik, Dutt was the intellectual weight behind the formation of the British Communist Party in 1920, and he became the Party’s key link with the Comintern, which later earned him the moniker of ‘Stalin’s mouthpiece’ in Britain.
His father, Upendra Krishna Dutt, born in Calcutta in 1857, left for England to study medicine as a young man, and eventually settled there. Palme was the family name of his Swedish wife.
Rajani Palme Dutt was born at Cambridge to Upendra Krishna Dutt and Anna Palme. Dutt's family household was a meeting place for visiting Indian nationalist leaders and leading figures in the British labour movement. Educated at the Perse School, Cambridge (1907) and Balliol College, Oxford.
