  2. Oct 16, 2014 · Jul 13, 2016. The Town That Dreaded Sundown is a meta-sequel and a kind of remake for the movie that released in 1976, both are slasher horror movies. The 1976 is basically just a slasher movie based on the Texarkana Moonlight Murders, which is a unsolved case to this day. The 2014 remake, which are the one we're reviewing, is a meta-sequel ...

The Town That Dreaded Sundown is a movie loosely based on a movie called The Town That Dreaded Sundown which itself was loosely based on real events. Or maybe it’s a sequel. Or a meta follow-up fused with a remake. It’s all a bit confusing really. And ultimately, not very good.

Which is a shame as the creative team involved suggests this should be a genre winner, the film a collaboration between American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy and powerhouse producer Jason Blum, the man behind the likes of Paranormal Activity, Insidious and Sinister.

Those twin talents can’t stop Sundown turning into something of a snoozefest, however, which is a shame as it starts out promisingly enough, kicking off with a foreboding voice that sets the horrific scene...

Self-reference can work in horror, with Wes Craven nailing it in both Scream and New Nightmare. But here it feels forced and contrived, and when combined with pedestrian plotting, clichéd kills and a dull denouement, makes for a disappointing horror movie made by people who should know better.
