McCarthy was drafted 10th overall in the 1979 NHL draft, and played 460 games in the NHL for the Minnesota North Stars, and the Boston Bruins, producing 399 points (178 goals, 221 assists) over the span of 9 seasons.
After doing his time, McCarthy returned home to Ontario — first to coach kids in the GTHL, and later to coach at a variety of stops in junior hockey. Back with the game he once again loved.
