Rush Hour 3 made a big first step in paying back its huge production budget over the weekend, opening with just over $50 million, according to studio estimates. That's the second-best opening by a movie in the franchise, and some way behind the $67 million enjoyed by Rush Hour 2 six years ago.

The studio that made Rush Hour 3 likely got $130m or so. Throw in marketing costs and this movie was not likely profitable, just as the OP said. Even if you throw in PPV and physical media sales, they still don't likely cover the costs of the massive $140m budget + marketing.
