    Approximately 5 000 animal species and 30 000 plant species are protected by CITES from unsustainable international trade. These species are listed in CITES Appendix I, II or III according to the level of protection they need.

    Canada implements the protection of CITES listed species through Schedule I of the Wild Animal and Plant Trade Regulations (WAPTR).

    •Scientific names of species are the most reliable method for verifying whether a species is included in CITES.

    •“spp.” after a species name means that all the species under this group of species are controlled by CITES.

    •In some instances species will have details associated with their listing which can be seen by clicking on the Appendix symbol in the search tool. This may provide refinements on the species, the parts and derivatives, the products or the populations that are included or excluded in the CITES Appendices.
