Essanay Studios, officially the Essanay Film Manufacturing Company, was an early American motion picture studio. The studio was founded in 1907 in Chicago, and later developed an additional film lot in Niles Canyon, California.
By 1908, Essanay began construction of a larger studio at 1333-1345 W. Argyle in Chicago. Essanay produced films that starred many of the most famous silent film actors such as Ben Turpin, Wallace Beery, Francis X. Bushman, Gloria Swanson, Harold Lloyd, Tom Mix and Charlie Chaplin.
It is best known today for its series of Charlie Chaplin comedies of 1915. The studio was founded in 1907 in Chicago, Illinois, by George K. Spoor and Gilbert M. Anderson, originally as the Peerless Film Manufacturing Company. On August 10, 1907, the name was changed to Essanay (“S and A”).

The old studio was a pretty bare space in 2011, just an large empty room on the St. Augustine College campus, but if you knew that it was once a film studio, you could see that it was largely still intact.

For 1908, Essanay impressively managed to manufacture and release no less than seventy-two films. The production values of these movies increased drastically from the 1907 shorts: nearly all of them were shot in Essanay’s new studio facilities in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood.
