Madeleine and Jean-Paul are lovers. One night they are discovered by Madeleine's husband whom Madeleine then accidentally shoots. The two plan to meet on October 13th, in a cafe in Strasbourg. But before then, Jean-Paul is involved in a car accident and gets amnesia.

Caught in the act with her lover Jean-Paul, Madeleine kills her husband. She urges Jean-Paul to leave and meet her on a certain day at “Gretel’s”, in Strasbourg. Jean-Paul has an accident and loses his memory. The appointment in Strasbourg is the only thing he can remember.
Madeleine takes up with Jean-Paul's brother, Bastien (Johan Leysen), while Jean-Paul, arriving in Strasbourg, is mistaken for the heir to a fortune. The detective (Christian Vadim) on the case spends more time writing crime novels than investigating real-life crimes.
