In January, Gary Sinise and a small group of aspiring Highland Park high school actors organize under the name Steppenwolf Theatre Company at the North Shore Unitarian Church in Deerfield, Illinois and produce the first Steppenwolf play, And Miss Reardon Drinks A Little by Paul Zindel.
Fast forward nearly 50 years and the Steppenwolf Theatre Company has become the nation’s premier ensemble theatre with 49 members who are among the top actors, playwrights and directors in the field.
Sinise's acting career started on stage with the Steppenwolf Theatre Company in 1983, when he directed and starred in a production of Sam Shepard's True West for which he earned an Obie Award. In 1985, he earned the Regional Theatre Tony Award alongside the Steppenwolf Theatre Company.
The play had its world premiere at the Briar St. Theatre in Chicago, Illinois, on June 22, 1986, performed by the Steppenwolf Theatre Company. "If I Have to Go" was used in the play, but released only in 2006 on Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards .
