Thomas Tallis (c. 1505 – 23 November 1585; also Tallys or Talles) was an English composer of High Renaissance music. His compositions are primarily vocal, and he occupies a primary place in anthologies of English choral music. Tallis is considered one of England's greatest composers, and is honoured for his original voice in English musicianship.
Thomas Tallis was one of the most important English composers of sacred music before William Byrd. His style encompassed the simple Reformation service music and the great Continental polyphonic schools whose influence he was largely responsible for introducing into English music.
- The Editors of Encyclopaedia Britannica
Who was Thomas Tallis? Our school is named after composer Thomas Tallis. He was a true original who made music for the kings and queens of the 16th Century, and who lived in Greenwich. Two of his most famous pieces are Spem In Allium and If Ye Love Me which are still regularly played today.
A very large 11-18 community comprehensive school, founded in 1971. Named for the father of English Church music who lived in Greenwich. We have over 2100 young people from a wide range of backgrounds. 32% PP, 80 languages. About 58% boys in y7-11 because there are more girls’ than boys’ schools in the LA.
