    • Lanikai Beach. Picture the perfect Hawaiian beach and it would surely come close to this sweep of soft white sand lapped by gently aquamarine waters. Lanikai Beach is often named among the very best in Hawaii, and it’s easy to understand why when you glimpse the glimmering waters, the lush vegetation behind and the arresting vistas out to the Mokulua Islands.
    • Kailua Beach Park. At the south end of Kailua Bay, this beach park is a few steps from Lanikai Beach, but comes with all the facilities you would expect from a public beach.
    • Lanikai Pillbox Hike. Starting just behind Lanikai Beach you can embark on a short but very scenic hike along the Kaiwa Ridge, tracing the coastline for 1.8 miles.
    • Kalama Beach Park. A short walk around the bay from Kailua Beach Park is another enticing stretch of white sandy beach, a little less frequented than its neighbour to the south-east.
    • Snorkel and Sunbathe at Lanikai Beach. Kailua’s Lanikai Beach is not only one of Hawaii’s most beautiful beaches, it is also a great snorkeling spot! Less than 50 feet off the white sandy shore you’ll find an abundance of tropical fish, coral, and other marine life.
    • Hike the Lanikai Pillbox Trail (Ka’iwa Ridge Hike) Another iconic Kailua activity is the Lanikai Pillbox Trail. The trailhead is a short walk away from Lanikai Beach, and the trail boasts stunning panoramic views of the Mokulua Islands, Lanikai Beach, the Ko’olau Mountains, Kailua, and beyond.
    • Kayak to the Mokulua Islands. Yes! You can visit those cute little islands off of Lanikai Beach. All you need is a kayak (or a sailboat—I recommend a sailing tour later in this article).
    • Walk Along the Kawainui Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary (Local Favorite) This Kailua hidden gem is frequented by locals by rarely visited by tourists. Since I was housesitting for a local family during my visit to Kailua, I got some local travel tips, and this was definitely the best one!
  3. Kailua, a quintessential beach town, is blessed with two gorgeous beaches and steady onshore trade winds that make it great for windsurfing, kayaking and other water sports. Once a sleepy town of barely 3,000, it’s now a bedroom community of more than 36,000 residents.

  4. A long, graceful bay protected by a coral reef is Kailua’s delight. The nearly 4-mile-long stretch of ivory sand is made for strolling, and the weather and wave conditions can be just about perfect for swimming, kayaking, windsurfing and kitesurfing. None of this has gone unnoticed.
