However, when Frieza killed Krillin, Goku's fury awakened the legendary warrior within himself; on another note, that rage also gives Super Saiyan a range of intense personality traits to associate with it.

It is a super saiyan transformation, but appears to have traces of god ki leading to part of it to turn blue. Thus, it appears as though the exposure of god ki has allowed Trunks to emulate (most likely subconsciously) god ki to develop a blue aura.
Recently caught up on DBS. Loved the Zamasu arc but I feel that super saiyan rage wasnt really explained. I thought it was really awesome and I really like future Trunks as a character and so I'm happy he had such a power up and wasnt simply sitting behind Vegeta/Goku.

Trunks instead perfect SSJ2, and presumably SSJ Rage could be the true continuation of ssj forms. I believe that rage is simply what SSJ3 is supposed to be, but Goku instead mutated SSJ2 to make the SSJ3 we know, and Gotenks achieved that form because he knew that form as the pinnacle of power. Not because it truly is what the evolution of SSJ2 is.
