Vancouver’s only marathon started in 1972 when Tom Howard of Surrey, BC led a handful of marathon runners around five loops of Stanley Park to complete the first “British Columbia Marathon.” Since then, the event has expanded to include a Half Marathon, 8KM and Kids Run.
In 1979, Vancouver’s only Marathon – now the “Nike Vancouver International Marathon” – underwent an exciting course redesign. Starting at Smith and Hornby, the course, which previously featured five laps around Stanley Park, expanded into the city’s Downtown core and finished at Robson Square.
The Legacy Club recognizes runners who have participated in and completed the Vancouver Marathon, Half Marathon or 8KM event multiple times since their inaugural dates in 1972, 1989 and 2008 respectively.
