On Christmas Eve 1922, Jonas and Mary Elizabeth “Mollie” Gardner welcomed their seventh child into the world, Ava Lavinia Gardner. The large Gardner family made their home in the rural North Carolina community of Grabtown, seven miles east of Smithfield.
