An economic resurgence came in the late 1980s. A successful referendum in 1988 led to the opening of the Riverside Coliseum in 1992. This marked the beginning of Kamloops' journey to becoming Canada's Tournament Capital. The 1993 Canada Summer Games brought Canada to Kamloops.

The trading of furs with non–Indigenous communities began in Kamloops in approximately 1811, when the American–owned Pacific Fur Company began trading with Secwépemc communities. The company established a trading post at the confluence of the North and South Thompson Rivers.

Aug 26, 2022 · The City of Kamloops is proud to host the Canada 55+ Games. The Games will feature the nation’s best competitors who will travel from across the country to participate in 26 official events. This is the first time the Games have been held in British Columbia since they began in 1996.
