As India became free, Valsad was first included under the Bombay State. When Bombay was bifurcated in 1960 and a separate Gujarat state was formed the city and its adjoining area became a part of it. However, at that time the Valsad was just a subdivision under the Surat. A separate Valsad District was created only in June 1964.
