    Clunes is located 138 km north-west of Melbourne via Creswick and the M8 and 33 km north of Ballarat. It stands at an elevation of 311 metres.

    The first European settler in the district was Donald Cameron, an overlander from Sydney who took up a pastoral run in 1839. He named it Clunes after his birthplace near Inverness in Scotland.
