Early life. Marx was born in Manhattan. His parents were Sam Marx (called "Frenchie" throughout his life) and Minnie Schönberg Marx, both Jewish. Minnie's brother was Al Shean, who later gained fame as half of the vaudeville team Gallagher and Shean.
Zeppo Marx started appearing as a romantic lead and as a straight man after one of his brothers, Gummo, left the family act in 1919. He traveled with his elder brothers Groucho, Chico, and Harpo in vaudeville in the early 1920s.

On April 12, 1927 Zeppo married Marion Benda and they adopted two children, Timothy (in 1944) and Thomas (in 1945). They later divorced, on May 12, 1954. On September 18, 1959, he married Barbara Blakeley and adopted her son Bobby giving him his surname.
In a rare TV interview years later, Zeppo said that Zep is Italian-American slang for baby and as Zeppo was the youngest or baby Marx Brother, he was called Zeppo. Personal LIfe [ ] On April 12, 1927, Zeppo married Marion Bimberg Benda.
On 18 September 1959, Zeppo married Barbara Blakeley, whose son, Bobby Oliver, he adopted and gave his surname. Zeppo and Blakely divorced in 1972 or 1973. Blakely later married singer Frank Sinatra. At the end of his life Zeppo found himself in the middle of the disputes around Groucho's estate.
