Donaldsonville (historically French: Lafourche-des-Chitimachas) [ 2 ] is a city in, and the parish seat of Ascension Parish in the U.S. state of Louisiana. [ 3 ] Located along the River Road of the west bank of the Mississippi River, it is a part of the Baton Rouge metropolitan statistical area.

Donaldsonville was once home of the State Capitol of Louisiana, two Louisiana Governors (Johnson & Nicholls), Pierre Landry, the first elected Black Mayor in the United States, and world-renowned Chef John Folse. Religious, political, African American, and jazz history lives here.

From 1829-1831, Donaldsonville served as the Capitol of Louisiana. It is also known as the place where the first African American citizen, Pierre Caliste Landry, was appointed to serve as Mayor of an incorporated town.
Donaldsonville is the gateway to Louisiana's Cajun and Plantation Country, one of the state's oldest incorporated cities, the state capitol from 1829 to 1831. And the Donaldsonville Historic District contains the finest collection of buildings dating to the antebellum era of any Louisiana river town above New Orleans.

Donaldsonville is one of only three Mississippi River towns in the state north of New Orleans, which go beyond the normal speculative grid plan. Donaldsonville's plan incorporates baroque features such as a semicircular park and an axial street leading to an open public square.
