Gripsholm Castle (Swedish: Gripsholms slott) is a castle in Mariefred, Södermanland, Sweden. It is located by lake Mälaren in south central Sweden, in the municipality of Strängnäs, about 60 km west of Stockholm. Since Gustav Vasa, Gripsholm has belonged to the Swedish Royal Family and was used as one of their residences until the 18th century.
Gripsholm Castle is home to five hundred years of history. It features Sweden's finest examples of state apartments from the time of the House of Vasa, as well as one of Europe's best preserved 18th century theatres.

Gripsholm castle might be a bit of the beaten track, but it is well worth the hour or so journey from Stockholm (avoid the local hotels in the summertime). The castle itself is a time machine that immediately carries any history enthusiast back to the heydays of the Swedish dynasty of the Wasas.
