Harlingen became a commercial hub in the early 1920’s. Agriculture took root in the cotton, citrus and vegetable industries. All were packed, refrigerated, and shipped from facilities within the city. Valley Baptist Hospital, one of Harlingen’s healthcare providers, opened its doors in 1925.
