Hard Target literally has JCVD punching a fucking snake in the face and Wilford Brimly horse-high tailing it from an exploding building. It’s glorious.
The problem is most people haven’t seen the best version. The workprint of this film is much different. It’s fairly true to Woo’s spirit. The released version is a lukewarm version, that cuts out a significant amount of action. Universal really screwed up the edit and the release.
Hard Target was Woo's first American film and the first major Hollywood film made by a Chinese director. Universal Pictures was nervous about having Woo direct a feature and sent in director Sam Raimi to look over the film's production and to take Woo's place as director if he were to fail.
