The years 1962 to 1966 provided the Caravans with its most stable group member lineup, consisting of Washington, Walker, Caesar, George, James Herndon and Josephine Howard. The group also made frequent TV appearances during this time on shows such as TV Gospel Time and Jubilee Showcase.
The original members consisted of Irma Gwynn, Ora Lee Hopkins, Elyse Yancy, Edward Robinson, the pianist, Louise Overall Weaver, the organist, and of course Robert Anderson. They recorded their first records between 1949 and 1951 under the names Robert Anderson and Choir as well as Anderson singers and their original name.
Started by Albertina Walker, the Caravans were a home and spawning ground for producing brilliant spiritual vocal talent. Based in Chicago, the Caravans produced more gospel vocal artists than any organization at the time.
Cassietta George, Gloria Griffin, Johneron Davis, Louise McDowell, Dorothy Norwood, Imogene Greene and singing pianist James Cleveland were members between 1954 and ’56. Thirteen singles by the Caravans were issued by the States label in Chicago before they signed with Savoy Records in 1958.

But as Bessie told author Anthony Heilbut, times were hard for the group, recounting, "We used to sleep all day, not to be hungry."
