- Chariots of Fire is a good film but not a great one. It crossed the finish line in an upset for Best Picture, edging out a blockbuster favorite and two critics’ darlings that likely split votes. Still, this is an impressive production, featuring Oscar-winning costumes, great period flavor, gorgeous cinematography, and solid performances.

This film is wonderfully evocative of the time and place, with superb performances. Chariots of Fire shows us the source of the runners' determination: for one, a need to prove his worth to himself and the society that discriminates against him; for the other, a way of connecting to God.
CHARIOTS OF FIRE is undoubtedly one of the finest sports movies ever made because it isn't just about sports per se. Instead, it's a period picture summoning up life in the 1920s, with deep characterisation, strong and subtle acting from the principle actors, and a great attention to detail.
