The burgh's ruined original location has since been known as the Bruntons (a corruption of Burnt-town). [7] In the autumn of 1517, Duns Market Cross was also the destination of the head of the Sieur de la Bastie, the French Ambassador and Warden of the Eastern March, following his murder at Preston, by Home of Wedderburn.
Duns Market Square. Duns is a small market town in the Scottish Borders about 16 miles from Berwick-Upon-Tweed and about 7 miles from the small neighbouring town of Greenlaw. The town has a long and turbulent history dating back to the Iron Age. It was originally sited on Duns law where the remains of an Iron Age hill fort have been discovered.
Origin/meaning. The arms were granted on July 21, 1952. Duns was created a Burgh of Barony in 1489 and became a Police Burgh in 1842. The castle is Duns Castle, shown in the colours of two important families in the area, the Hay and Dunbar families. These are also represented in the bordure, with the roses of Dunbar and the escutcheons of Hay.

There were weekly market days, fairs for the sale of cattle, sheep, horses and wool; Duns still remains a market town.

The Jim Clark Museum, located in the Burgh Chambers is devoted to his exploits. Another famous son of Duns was John Duns Scotus, a medieval scholar and religious thinker who taught at the University of Paris.
