Apr 10, 2022 · With both approaches, we find modest negative impacts (3%–6%) on course completion. Our results suggest that faculty experience teaching a given course online does not mitigate the negative effects. In an exploratory analysis, we find minimal long-term impacts of the switch to online instruction.
The low efficacy for online learning stemmed from a variety of factors, including difficulties paying attention to online lectures, a view of oneself as less capable of learning online, and, as discussed earlier, barriers to receiving help from instructors or peers.
