The original Italian movie "Profumo di donna" (1974) of which Scent of a Woman is a remake is closer to its literary source (a book by Italian writer Giovanni Arpino) and I think a more complex, subtle and, in general, better movie that may have paradoxically aged better.

We sense he has always been lonely, but never lonelier than now, when he is trapped inside blindness. He lost his sight late in life, through his own stupidity, and now he gets drunk and waits for victims.
