Vyacheslav Mikhaylovich Molotov[ c ] (né Skryabin; [ d ] 9 March [O. S. 25 February] 1890 – 8 November 1986) was a Soviet politician, diplomat, and revolutionary who was a leading figure in the government of the Soviet Union from the 1920s to the 1950s, as one of Joseph Stalin 's closest allies.
Molotov was born Vyacheslav Mikhailovich Skryabin in the village of Kukarka, Yaransk Uyezd, Vyatka Governorate (now Sovetsk, Kirov Oblast), the son of a merchant. Contrary to a commonly-repeated error, he was not related to the composer Alexander Scriabin.

He was the last surviving major participant in the October Revolution at the time of his death in 1986. Shortly before his death, he criticized the revisionist policies of Foreign Minister Eduard Shevardnadze.
