Sioux Falls (/ ˌ s uː ˈ f ɔː l z / SOO FALZ) is the most populous city in the U.S. state of South Dakota and the 121st-most populous city in the United States. Sioux Indians occupied the area when the town site, which was named for the falls of the river, was founded in 1857 by land speculators.
