Apart from acting and directing, he is an accomplished artist (his paintings have appeared on Dutch postage stamps), and has co-authored a Dutch cookbook. In November 2004, he released the book Schilder, which is an overview of his paintings.
During the filming of the series on Gauguin, Krabbé was inspired by his subject, and produced the twelve paintings that will be on display at Museum de Fundatie. Shimmering landscapes, seascapes, some light as a feather, many deep, heavy and absorbing, as if the ocean were teeming with monsters.
Krabbé’s career took an abrupt turn at the height of his acting success in the Netherlands in the late Seventies when he chose to ricochet back to art school where he graduated at the Amsterdam based National Academy of Fine Art in 1981.
