Approximately 30 minutes to the east of Piacenza is the delightful city of Parma – Parma is known for its Ham exports, but also has a great deal of history, culture and interesting attractions.

As you leave the Piacenza train station behind and head into the centre, you’ll notice a huge, unique building, looking halfway between a castle and a military fortress – it’s Palazzo Farnese, once home to the rulers of the city, and now housing an eclectic collection of museums.
- See an ‘Etruscan Liver’ There’s also one more reason to visit Piacenza located inside Palazzo Farnese – the Fegato Etrusco (Etruscan Liver), definitely one of the coolest exhibits we’ve ever seen!
- Tour ‘100 Churches’ Piacenza has two nicknames – it is known as ‘Primogenita d’Italia’ (Italy’s firstborn), as it was the first city to vote in favour of annexation to the Kingdom of Sardinia, which would then become the Italian Kingdom.
- See Stunning Mosaics. If you have time to visit just one church in Piacenza, make sure it’s not one of the above – instead, head to San Savino, located not far from the station, opposite the public gardens known locally as ‘Merluzzo’ (meaning codfish – I have no idea why!)

Piacenza was the capital city of the duchy until Ottavio Farnese, Duke of Parma (1547–1586), moved the capital to Parma. The city underwent some of its most difficult years during the rule of Odoardo Farnese, Duke of Parma (1622–1646). Out of the population of 30,000 in the city between 6,000 and 13,000 Piacentini died from famine and plague.
