The greatest common factor (GCF or GCD or HCF) of a set of whole numbers is the largest positive integer that divides evenly into all numbers with zero remainder. For example, for the set of numbers 18, 30 and 42 the GCF= 6.

    Any non zero whole number times 0 equals 0 so it is true that every non zero whole number is a factor of 0. k × 0 = 0 so, 0 ÷ k = 0 for any whole number k. For example, 5 × 0 = 0 so it is true that 0 ÷ 5 = 0. In this example, 5 and 0 are factors of 0. GCF(5,0) = 5 and more generally GCF(k,0) = k for any whole number k. However, GCF(0, 0) is undefin...

There are several ways to find the greatest common factor of numbers. The most efficient method you use depends on how many numbers you have, how large they are and what you will do with the result.

Given two whole numbers, subtract the smaller number from the larger number and note the result.
Repeat the process subtracting the smaller number from the result until the result is smaller than the original small number.
Use the original small number as the new larger number. Subtract the result from Step 2 from the new larger number.
Repeat the process for every new larger number and smaller number until you reach zero.
  5. Example 1: Find the common factors of 120 and 121. Solution: Factors of 120 = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 15, 20, 24, 30, 40, 60, and 120. Factors of 121 = 1, 11, and 121. Therefore, the common factor of 120 and 121 is 1. Example 2: Find the greatest common factor of 88 and 121. Solution: Factors of 88 = 1, 2, 4, 8, 11, 22, 44, and 88
