Early Settlement and Growth. Russellville was first settled in the early 19th century by European-Americans. The city was named after Dr. Thomas Russell, a local physician who owned a trading post in the area. Initially, the settlement grew slowly but gained momentum with the arrival of the railroad in the late 1800s.
