Erasmus Smithers and the Founding of the Town. In 1857, landowner Erasmus Smithers (1829-1905) met and married Tobin’s widow, Diana, who held the patent on her husband’s claim. Between them they ended up owning nearly 500 acres of land.
By 1875, Smithers along with Charles Shattuck and Thomas Morris platted the small town of five square blocks and named it Renton after a wealthy local investor in the town’s coal company, Captain William Renton.
