some ways i could see it happening: beerus is a bad god of destruction. zeno or the grand priest had enough of his laziness and force him to fight other candidates (maybe just goku) to the death (destruction) for the position. whoever wins, they'll reveal they just wanted to scare beerus.
Goku using MSSB was able to fight M. Zamasu on equal footing and destroyed half of him using An imperfect Hakai and MZ needed to use a human shield to survive. The vegeta that Beerus defeated was as strong as The Goku that fought M. Zamasu so it stands tonreason that Beerus could defeat mz as well.
We'll never see Dragon Balls in tournament unless 1 player is specifically going for em, and we'll hardly see dramatic finishes unless players are actively trying to trigger them (and they can even avoid them by avoiding certain stages).
