The competition reusing the remains of the older structure was won by Alexander Hepburn, a local architect, and the design for a new building was won by George W. King of Toronto. Designed by Toronto architect George W. King, with the assistance of local architect J.W. Siddall, the building was intended to exploit its irregular site, presenting interesting façades from all angles. Its monumental scale, prominent tower and use of red brick distinguish it as a civic building.

Aug 16, 2022 · Built in 1913, architect John Wilson Siddall designed the Big Nickel Theatre. It cost $14,000 to construct the brick and steel “fireproof” building. The theatre’s main façade was faced with two colours of buff brick and featured decorative patterning.
