A .jar file contains compiled code (*.class files) and other data/resources related to that code. It enables you to bundle multiple files into a single archive file. It also contains metadata. Since it is a zip file it is capable of compressing the data that you put into it. Couple of things i found useful.

In the documentation, it states ""Note: The Class-Path header points to classes or JAR files on the local network, not JAR files within the JAR file or classes accessible over Internet protocols. To load classes in JAR files within a JAR file into the class path, you must write custom code to load those classes."
You can define a jar artifact in the module settings (or project structure). Right click the module > Open module settings > Artifacts > + > JAR > from modules with dependencies. Set the main class. Making a jar is then as easy as clicking "Build artifact..." from the Build menu. As a bonus, you can package all the dependencies into a single jar.

Sep 6, 2015 · I have a jar file having 2 java classes both having Main methods. Is there a way I can specify while running the jar file, which class to call ? I know that manifest file can be modified to specify the Main class but since only one class can be mentioned, that does not help. I checked the below links, but those dint solve the problem:

However, it works with version 2.3 and later of the plugin. Jul 14, 2015 · For Gradle 5.x, 6.x and 7.x (tested personally on Gradle 7.6 and verified the documentation of version 5) In more recent versions of Gradle the results described by the OP are achieved automatically by the default building script if you specify the version property in your module build.gradle file (commonly seen right after your plugin block and before any other blocks).
