CHEER UP, JOHANNES! (1941) A married couple has a son, after the divorce the mother gets guardianship and takes the son to Argentina. Once the mother dies, the son returns to the father, but culturally he feels Argentine, and he doesn't want to know anything about the father or Germany.
Upon his mother's death, fifteen-year-old Johannes von Redel returns to his father's rural estate in Prussia. Johannes has been living with his mother in Argentina for the past ten years, and he has grown up as an urban, decadent, and fastidious Auslandsdeutscher (German living abroad), alienated from his German roots.

Po jej śmierci wrócił do ojca, właściciela ziemskiego Redel, w Niemczech. Jednak Johannes ma trudności z przystosowaniem się, a relacje z ojcem również charakteryzują się odrzuceniem i buntem. Redel traktuje syna z zewnętrzną surowością i jest przytłoczony sytuacją.
