Sarah Z (/zɛd/) (born: June 17, 1998 (1998-06-17) [age 25]) is a Canadian YouTuber. She is best known for her video essays analyzing fandom and online culture and phenomena over time, particularly on Tumblr. They use she/her and they/them pronouns.[citation needed]
She began posting in 2017, starting off mostly as a review channel, talking mostly about why certain TV-shows were bad. She has described her critique as being "through both a critical lens, talking about media as it pertains to larger society, and an analytical lens, providing substantive analysis on the work itself".
Her other content includes analysis of rhetorical devices as well as more political, current events, or journalism oriented videos. Her more recent content, which has expanded her platform, focuses on the history of certain fandoms or dramas and events within certain fandoms, such as her video detailing the rise of the Onceler fandom and her video about "TJLC", a subset within the Sherlock fandom.
They are from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and are bisexual.[citation needed]
Sarah Z has courted some controversy over the years as her videos tend to cover charged topics or fandoms with a divisive reception. This has led members of these fandoms to speak out against her videos, some with the erroneous claim that she is making fun of them, which she rarely, if ever, is: if the videos are not at least sympathetic, they cover fandoms she is very much a part of or previously participated in.
These claims can generally be chalked up to members of fandoms not actually watching the video and going off of reputation alone. In the case of her video on the history of Homestuck, leadership from What Pumpkin Studios (including Andrew Hussie) even threatened a lawsuit over perceived defamation, only to back down when it emerged in conversations with Sarah Z and her representatives that no one on the What Pumpkin team had actually watched the entire video.
