Both the blades and segments they are on alternate from silver to purple. It occasionally uses its arms as "wings" to glide through the air.

I believe they are in the mansion. If memory serves me correctly, in Twilight Town, there are Assassins in the mansion's basement, where you fought Axel as Roxas. This is 2FM, though. I don't know if enemy formations were changed around. I never found any in Twilight Town when I started farming them.

Assassins spend a lot of time in the ground, during which they are invulnerable to attack. They are only vulnerable when parried. When they attack by flailing wildly, use Guard, then Counterguard and attack. Alternatively, Reflect is also effective.
If you can use the Reaction Command Fail-Safe, do so. This will make the Assassin explode, cause you no damage and still giving you Experience.

And it’s at that point (in game) the assassin Nobodies (the ones specifically under Axel’s control, or at least themed after him…) begin appearing. I don’t think the assassin Nobodies were featured in the manga, but I’m not sure.

When it approaches with a low posture, look out! If cornered, it retaliates with its buddies with kicks and other attacks. Fight carefully when outnumbered.
