   Will a 2600 cart work on an 8-bit Atari?

   • As far as I know carts for 2600 console won't work in 8-bit Atari. Lots of listings are for untested games somebody found in a basement or attic. I doubt sellers will know what system those carts are compatible with. Basically 2600 and 7800 carts are completely different so won't work.

   Can I use Atari 8-bit line/XEGS carts?

   • None of the above can use the Atari 8-bit line/XEGS carts. The latter carts are smaller for the 8-bit line/XEGS and software is different because of the different hardware, graphics modes and capability. (Although I believe some chips were used in a lot of them such as the CPU and audio chip POKEY, (correct me if wrong people ).

   Can Atari 7800 play XEGS carts?

   • In the 80's the cart based - and at the time groundbreaking consoles that came out were: The 7800 can play 2600 and 5200 carts as is backwards compatible. So these are cart only consoles - no keyboards or plug in disk drives/cassette decks or peripherals available for them. None of the above can use the Atari 8-bit line/XEGS carts.

   How do I know if my Atari is a 2600 or 7800?

   • One way to tell is by the size. Atari computer cartridges are smaller than 2600 / 7800 and 5200 cartridges. The label might even say for which Atari systems they're intended for. Thanks! I am reading thru all the good info here on the forums.
