  2. Room temp mugs should be fine with hot liquids. To the prior remarks, I too avoid hot/cold extremes- not risking thermal shock. I don’t put any fridge bowls in the microwave.

  3. Ceramic cups and mugs tend to keep things warmer, not colder. This doesn't make sense. I guess there could be a temperature-dependant insulator that is more effective at higher temps but I highly doubt that is the case. Generally speaking, insulation ability is not a factor of the temperature.
