IMO, it's a lot easier to get by without an AP if you are never in IMC, but it sure does help with the workload when you are by yourself and shooting an approach. Personally, I consider it minimum equipment for flying solo IFR. Someone described it to me this way: "Autopilot is the best pilot in the airplane!" 3.

In the event of a vacuum- or pressure-system failure, the AI will spin down, usually displaying an increasing bank angle. If the pilot fails to catch the failure and disengage the autopilot, bad things can happen quickly.
Autopilot isn't a threat to safety. Complacency is a threat to safety. I can see how placing the blame on autopilot could help crutch someone's argument but it's the pilot's complacency that should be understood. I depend on the autopilot to mitigate pilot fatigue, however, I do not rely on it to fly the airplane.
