I’ll add to what everyone has been saying - 100% yes books are better. Other than all the plot intricacies that are way better explained in the books, my favorite part about the books is the characters. I LOVE book Harry.

Minerva McGonagall - Prisoner Of Azkaban
Minerva McGonagall was the sassiest teacher in Harry Potter, which is seen every year in her interactions with her students. She is a no-nonsense woman, and when her teenage pupils give her sass, she doesn't hesitate to return it. At times, this sass could be a comfort to Harry, such as in Prisoner of Azkabanwhen she told him that Professor Trelawney predicts a student's death every year. She assured him he was perfectly safe but joked that if she were wrong, she wouldn't expect him to turn i...
Molly Weasley - Goblet Of Fire
Many mother-and-son duos can relate to the relationship between Molly and Ron Weasley, especially during the latter's moodiest years. InGoblet of Fire, Ron's attitude over his family's lack of wealth comes to a head, and he lashes out about his hand-me-down clothing and used books. However, Molly wouldn't have it. When Ron announced that he wouldn't wear the dress robes she had given him, she told him that he could go naked for all she cared. Ron might not have found it funny, but it was undo...
Ron Weasley - Goblet Of Fire
One of the most frustrating omissions from the Goblet of Firemovie is the full Quidditch World Cup. The events of the game in the book were exciting, but by cutting this scene, the film lost several comical moments. One of these is Ron's excitement over his Omnioculars, which Harry had bought for him. With them, Ron could zoom in on the arena and even replay events that took place. Instead of using them to watch the players, he found great joy watching a man pick his nose on repeat—gross but...
Ron Weasley - Goblet Of Fire
Many of Ron's quotes in Harry Potter are full of lude humor, which is precisely what made him such a fun character. He said all the kinds of things that would be expected from a teenager, for better or worse. In Goblet of Fire, while the Gryffindors were in Divination class, Lavender Brown asked Professor Trelawney to help her identify a planet, which she learned was Uranus. Of course, Ron couldn't pass up the opportunity to turn this into a joke. It was precisely the kind of high school char...
Harry Potter - Order Of The Phoenix
Harry learned much of his sass from his years living with the Dursleys. Though it didn't often bode well for him, he couldn't resist taking a stab at their intelligence from time to time. He wasn't big or strong enough to fight physically, but his mind was sharp in a way theirs was not. In the summer before school started in Order of the Phoenix, Harry had taken to watching the news every day, looking out for any sign of Voldemort. He didn't want to explain this to his Uncle, so when Vernon a...
Fred & George - Half-Blood Prince
Though the rest of Diagon Alley had been mostly closed down, business at Weasley's Wizard Wheezes in Harry Potter was doing very well. The people of the wizarding world needed something to cheer them up, and Fred and George were there to give it their best effort. Among their most ridiculous items is "You-No-Poo," a joke product (named for the Dark Lord himself) that induces uncomfortable constipation in unsuspecting victims. Molly Weasley worried the joke would get her sons killed, but if it...
Harry Potter - Half-Blood Prince
Because Snape so thoroughly despised Harry, he often made lessons nearly unbearable. For the most part, Harry managed to keep his temper under control, but from time to time, he had to let a witty retort slip through. One such occasion missing from the Harry Potter movies was while Snape was teaching Defense Against the Dark Arts. Harry had answered a mocking question from the professor with just "yes," and when Snape reminded him to say "yes, sir," the cheeky Boy-Who-Lived responded with a q...
Ginny Weasley - Half-Blood Prince
Ginny Weasley's character was drastically downplayed in the Harry Pottermovies. She was tough, intelligent, and just as funny as Fred and George in the books. However, with little time to explore her character on screen, some of her best quotes were cut. One of these was from just after she and Harry finally started dating. With Harry's "Chosen One" fame, Ginny's classmates began asking her all sorts of questions about the famed Harry Potter, such as if he had a Hippogriff tattooed across his...
Ron Weasley - Deathly Hallows
While Rupert Grint nailed Ron's mannerisms in the Harry Potter movies, including his teasing relationship with Harry, much of their friendship dynamic was cut. The duo constantly teased each other, as best friends often will, and it was part of what made them so enjoyable to read. These moments were fewer in Deathly Hallows, but Harry's 17th birthday at the Burrow gave Ron an opportunity. Officially able to use magic outside of Hogwarts, Harry used his wand to summon his glasses, but they pok...
Fred Weasley - Deathly Hallows
Even after Fred and George could not run their shop, they still did their best to cheer up the wizarding world masses. Members of the Order of the Phoenix had started a radio program called Potter Watch (which was left out of the Deathly Hallows movies entirely). While they used aliases, it was easy to recognize the twins' brand of comedy. Fred and George reminded people to be cautious of Voldemort, explaining that the Dark Lord is swift and powerful. However, to lighten the mood, they gave a...

- The Books Are Funnier. Sure, the movies have their moments of comic relief, but all in all, Rowling's books are way funnier. Fred and George get way more time to shine, and in general there's a lot of British wit that gets lost when the story is translated to screen.
- Characters Are Changed. Prime example: Book Ginny was a completely different person than Movie Ginny. In the book, Ginny was sassy, powerful, and independent — in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix she says that "the thing about growing up with Fred and George is that you sort of start thinking anything's possible if you've got enough nerve."
- Characters Are Left Out Of The Movies. Even worse than changing characters, is the fact that some are completely left out. From Peeves the Poltergeist to Winky the House-Elf, many iconic characters didn't even get a mention in the films.
- We Don't Get To Hear Harry's Thoughts In The Films. Though the Harry Potter books are told in third person, because of Rowling's use of free indirect discourse, readers get to delve into Harry's mind and understand his thoughts and feelings throughout the series.
