CBMT promotes excellence in music therapy by awarding board certification based on proven, up-to-date knowledge and competence in clinical practice.
MTA is a registered Certification Mark with the Canadian Intellectual Property Office, an agency of Industry Canada. CAMT has the exclusive right to certify a music therapist with the MTA credential when they successfully completes the certification process.
Certified music therapists (MTAs) must complete a minimum Bachelor’s Degree, Graduate Certificate or Masters Degree in music therapy from an approved post-secondary institution and a 1000-hour supervised clinical internship.
As defined by the Canadian Association of Music Therapy (CAMT, September 2020), music therapy is a discipline in which Certified Music Therapists (MTAs) use music purposefully within therapeutic relationships to support development, health, and well-being.
The credential MT-BC, Music Therapist – Board Certified, is granted by the Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT) to identify music therapists who have demonstrated the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to practice music therapy at the current level of the profession.

As a music therapist, you can become board certified by passing the CBMT Board Certification examination, which earns you the Music Therapist-Board Certified (MT-BC) credential. The exam is multiple-choice and consists of 150 questions.
