As many pondkeepers will attest, pond insects and other inverts can be spineless, cold-blooded little fish killers. Dragonflies. Dragonflies are beautiful insects, and there are approximately 300 species of them. They first appeared around 325 million years ago, with some having wingspans of more than a foot (30 cm).
- Fire-Bellied Toad. Fire-bellied toads are a great choice for any Paludarium. They are great to look at and often coexist well with other animals and fish.
- Springtails. Springtails are small, wingless insects which often are perceived as pests. However, they are a great fit for a Paludarium, due to their adaptability and low maintenance requirements.
- Yellow-Bellied Slider Turtle. Yellow-Bellied Sliders love to bask in the warmth, so be sure to incorporate some floating logs for them to relax on. These colorful turtles start out primarily as carnivores when they are young, eating water insects and small fish, however, as adults, their diet is predominantly vegetarian.
- Vampire Crab. Vampire Crabs are really unique and can add some great color to your Paludarium. They are known for their bright purple pincers and yellow eyes.
- Mayfly Larvae. Mayflies begin their life cycles in water, where the mother lays her eggs on the surface and they either sink to the bottom or attach to some sort of relatively still surface, like a plant leaf, a log, or a rock.
- Dragonfly Larvae. Like mayflies (and any other species on this list that includes “larvae” in the title), dragonflies begin their lives directly in the water as eggs that then hatch into larvae and develop further into nymphs.
- Stonefly Larvae. Stoneflies are of the species that are intolerant of pollution, so having them in your pond is a good sign! In fact, they require between 8 and 10 parts per million (ppm) of dissolved oxygen.
- Water Strider. Water striders, often nicknamed “skater bugs” because of the way that they appear to skate atop the water’s surface, can be found all around the world.
