The band was formed in 1972 by Andy "Adny" Shernoff, who was attending the State University of New York at New Paltz, and Ross "The Boss" Friedman who was playing in a local band called Total Crudd. Scott "Top Ten" Kempner was asked to join, and the trio rented a house in Kerhonkson, New York, where they lived and rehearsed with various drummers.

Mar 4, 2021 · The recording of the new album has been really smooth and drama free. I’m enjoying the process. The band members have decades of experience making records so there’s a lot to draw from. We know the elements of a good Dictators song, so we don’t waste time going down rabbit holes and it’s keeping everybody busy during the pandemic.
